Microsoft is reshaping Copilot Notebooks from a source-grounded question-and-answer tool into something that can act on notebook content: delegating tasks, running recurring automations, and editing Office files directly inside a notebook, according to Neowin.
Only one piece of that Copilot Notebooks October 2026 update currently carries a dated public Microsoft 365 Roadmap entry, though. Audio Overview is listed in the Microsoft 365 Message Center archive with both preview and general availability targeted for this month.
That gap matters for anyone tempted to build a workflow around the new capabilities before they've shown up. Task delegation, scheduled briefings, in-notebook Office editing, interactive reports, and a choice between OpenAI and Anthropic models are rolling out through Microsoft's Frontier early-access program in phases, according to Neowin. Keep three buckets separate while reading the rest of this: what Microsoft has publicly scheduled on its roadmap, what's rolling out through Frontier without a public GA date for the individual feature, and what the available documentation doesn't establish at all.
Who already has Copilot Notebooks, and who might see the new features
Baseline Copilot Notebooks is available to Microsoft Copilot and eligible Copilot Chat users. Microsoft also makes Notebooks available to Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium, and Pro subscribers, although capabilities differ by license.
Microsoft's current Copilot Notebooks licensing guidance says Copilot Chat users can use Notebooks with up to 50 sources, while Microsoft Copilot users get the fuller experience and grounding from up to 300 sources. Some capabilities, including Audio Overviews, are unavailable to Copilot Chat users under the current licensing matrix.
For work and school accounts, Copilot Chat itself is available at no additional cost with a range of eligible Microsoft 365 and Office 365 subscriptions, including qualifying business, enterprise, and education plans. Accounts also need a SharePoint or OneDrive service plan to create Copilot Notebooks.
That's separate from Frontier access. Microsoft describes Frontier as its early-access program for experimental AI features, and the new Notebooks capabilities are being introduced there before broader release. Having ordinary Notebooks access therefore doesn't guarantee that task delegation, in-notebook Office editing, or the other new capabilities will appear.
Copilot Notebooks task automation: what's reported and what's missing
Neowin's report describes a shift from answering questions about notebook content to completing tasks on a user's behalf, including recurring automations such as daily briefings and weekly status reports. The same report says Copilot can recommend documents, presentations, and other outputs based on what's already inside a notebook.
The report doesn't establish all the controls that will accompany those capabilities inside Notebooks. It doesn't provide a feature-specific GA date or fully document how scheduling, organizational oversight, or output delivery will work for these notebook-based automations.
Microsoft separately documents scheduling and recurring tasks in other Copilot experiences, but those controls shouldn't automatically be assumed to work identically inside Copilot Notebooks.
Until Microsoft publishes feature-level documentation for the Notebooks implementation, treat the new task capabilities as Frontier features rather than workflows every Notebooks user can depend on.
Edit Office files in Copilot Notebooks, plus interactive reports and model choice
The same Neowin report says users will be able to open and edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files directly inside Copilot Notebooks using the Office apps' editing capabilities.
That extends the current Notebooks experience, which already supports Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, OneNote, and other file types as references. Microsoft Copilot users can also ground notebooks in additional work sources such as SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, and Teams content, depending on the source type and license.
Interactive reports and model choice round out the reported Frontier bundle. Neowin says Copilot can create reports with visualizations, filters, and other interactive elements and that users can choose between OpenAI and Anthropic models when working in Notebooks.
Still unclear from the available feature-level documentation is exactly how editing, collaboration, and model availability will vary by tenant and license once these Notebooks capabilities move beyond Frontier. Those details are worth checking in Microsoft's documentation before treating the preview behavior as the eventual GA experience.
Audio Overview: the one confirmed date in the Copilot Notebooks October 2026 update
Audio Overview is the clearest piece of the update on Microsoft's public release calendar.
Microsoft 365 Roadmap item 570966, published Oct. 8, lists new capabilities including topic-based episodes for navigating longer content, new Critique and Debate formats, support for sensitivity labels, and expanded Audio Overview context covering more content types.
The entry's status is In development, with both preview and general availability targeted for October 2026. That's a scheduled window, not proof that every eligible user can use the new formats today.
Neowin reports that the expanded sources include Teams conversations and Outlook emails. Microsoft's roadmap entry itself says Audio Overview context is expanding to "more content types" without identifying those two sources in its description, so that specific detail currently rests on Neowin's reporting.
The roadmap entry lists Microsoft 365, OneNote, and Microsoft Copilot as affected services and identifies the rollout for Worldwide Standard Multi-Tenant environments.
Before you test or share a Copilot Notebook
A few documented limits matter more than the headline features, especially for anyone testing Frontier capabilities or sharing a notebook with colleagues.
Microsoft says Copilot can use up to 300 files from a shared location such as a SharePoint folder or site for grounding, selecting the files it considers most relevant to the prompt. If a particular file absolutely must be included, Microsoft recommends adding that file directly to the notebook.
The limits also vary by license. Copilot Chat users can add up to 50 references, while Microsoft Copilot users can add more than 300 references, with up to 300 used for grounding.
Sharing deserves particular attention. Microsoft's current Notebooks FAQ says there's currently no read-only notebook role: anyone invited to a shared notebook receives editing access.
Sharing a notebook can also give recipients access to linked files. Microsoft says recipients are invited to linked files where the notebook owner has permission to share them, while files whose permissions can't be transferred may remain restricted.
Notebooks also can't currently be assigned to a group as members. Microsoft says they're stored in a personal SharePoint Embedded container associated with the creator and that a group-managed notebook solution is in development.
Deletion is another area to handle carefully. Microsoft's current documentation says deleting a Copilot page or notebook is permanent and can't currently be undone, although a notebook recycle bin is in development.
Anyone granted Frontier access should therefore start with a non-sensitive notebook before using the new features for important work. Add must-use files directly, verify source coverage before trusting an output, check sharing permissions before inviting anyone, and test new editing or automation behavior before relying on it for consequential work.
What to do now
Open Copilot Notebooks directly to see which capabilities are available for the account and tenant in question. Having a Microsoft 365 plan that provides Notebooks doesn't by itself mean the account has the new Frontier features.
Avoid building time-sensitive workflows around the new task delegation, recurring automation, Office editing, interactive reports, or model-selection capabilities until their availability and controls are clear for the specific tenant.
For Audio Overview, Microsoft has provided something firmer: Roadmap item 570966 targets both preview and general availability for October 2026. But its current status remains In development, so the October date is still a rollout target rather than confirmation that the update has reached every eligible user.
